Creating Fashion For Spring

Catwalk Fashion Spring 2023

Your Future Fashion-Self

It’s time to start looking ahead to spring and to your future fashion self!

Fashion creators and up-cyclers always need to be thinking ahead. It’s not always that easy when the weather outside is at odds with what you want to create but that’s the nature of slow fashion.

Fashion creation isn't instant, so you need time to decide what you’re going to do and then time to actually make it.

Think Ahead!

The reality of that is that you have to work ahead of season – while the sun’s shinning you make cold weather clothes and while it’s winter you make for summer. So, you need to have an idea of what you’ll want to wear ahead of when you’ll be wearing it, in a few weeks, or even months’ time. In other words you have to get in touch with your future fashion self.

Finding Inspiration.

It all starts with inspiration and there is a vast amount of fashion inspiration available to everyone. Fashion shows used to be very closed affairs but now they tend to be live-streamed on social platforms, giving you the opportunity to be inspired 6 months ahead of the season. That’s plenty of time to be put together your own ideas for what you want to make. The shows give you the perfect starting point in terms of colours, fabrics and silhouettes, which you can develop to suit your own tastes.

Another great source of inspiration is vintage clothing. There is often a thread of nostalgia running through fashion at any given time so it’s possible to go straight back to source and use originals. This will really add something unique to your look!

Creating Mood Boards.

The next part of the process is creating mood boards, pulling together visuals and images that inspire you. Using fashion trends as a starting point you can gather images to build a picture of how you want to look, everything from fabric textures and colours, silhouettes and people whose style you admire. Slowly a picture will emerge of the kind of garments you want to make. This exercise is a lot of fun and the more time and effort you put into gathering your ideas the more likely you are to create something that resonates deeply with you and that you’ll love wearing for a long time!
