Game Changing Fashion!

Selfridges Project Earth

This week Selfridges announced that by 2030 they would like almost half of their transactions to be from fashion that is re-sold, repaired or rented. In celebration of this we wanted to feature one the brands they stock as part of their Project Earth initiative, Sami Miro.

Sami Miro

Sami Miro is designed, produced and sewn ethically in Los Angeles. The fabrics are made from certified eucalyptus Tencel, organic hemp, vintage denim and deadstock. What’s great about the clothing is the cool modern aesthetic. When we think about upcycled or ethically sourced fashion, we tend to envisage clothing that is visibly repaired and patched together, this collection is very far from that. It’s new and it proves that it is possible to create directional fashion in a sustainable way.

Your Inspiration.

Like many of our favourite brands at the moment this collection gives a nod to the last millennium with a contemporary attitude. That means its perfectly possible to re-create the looks using vintage denim and preloved, upcycled clothing. There are many examples available on vintage re-sale sites. The idea is to find pieces that are are powerful, with clean cuts that are impactful and relevant for right now.

Deadstock Fabric.

Another option is making clothes from deadstock fabric. Deadstock fabric is leftover fabric that can’t be used for its original purpose, also known as ‘overstock’, ‘surplus fabric’ and ‘remnant fabric’. This is a great sustainable option on the one hand because it means that makers can use up fabric that would otherwise be wasted, so how sustainable the fabric is comes down to the fabric itself and what it is made of.

A simple google search will bring up deadstock fabric sellers in your area or online sellers. Most online fabric shops will send swatches to you for a small charge before you buy a large quantity. It’s definitely worth checking out as making clothing in this way enables you to create amazing fashion that’s trully sustainable. The New Craft House below is a great place to start.
